Basins

Sediment basins operate on the same principle as sediment traps but operate on a larger scale. Sediment basins are used to slow down runoff from disturbed areas where the total contributing drainage area is over three acres (1.2 hectares). The maximum drainage area controlled by a basin should not exceed 100 acres (40 hectares).

They normally consist of 50% wet storage (excavated area) and 50% in the form of dry storage. Regulatory agencies typically limit sediment basins to 134 cubic yards of sediments per acre (254 m3 per hectare) of the total contributing drainage area. Permanent basins may be used as temporary sediment basins during the construction phase of the project by modifying the outflow control structure in order to provide the required wet and dry storage volumes.

A temporary sediment basin used in combination with other control measures, such as seeding or mulching, is quite effective.
